Knitting 101: Day Four

Published by pef1996 at 7:58 am under Knitting, May 2008 Class Edit This

My apologies for being a few days late. We had an unexpected event come up and I haven’t been home for two days! But on we go!

I hope you’ve been enjoying your week so far! You’ve learned how to cast on, knit a row of stitches and continued knitting stitches for twenty-five rows. Wow! The last step is to learn how to bind-off which is what you do when you are finished with your project. Let’s go!

First, go ahead and knit three more rows. You can easily adapt this once you go on to make another to be wider or longer for whatever you want to use it for. But let’s just do three more rows.

bindoff1.jpgOnce those are finished, we need to bind off. Binding off bindoff2.jpgis simply working to get your stitches off your needle to create a nice clean edge for your finished project. The first step is to go ahead and knit two stitches as if you were going to knit another row. But, don’t knit a third stitch! Once you have those two stitches on the bindoff3.jpgright needle, you need to take your left needle and slip it into the very first stitch on the right needle. You are going to pass that first stitch over the second stitch and then pull the stitch your passing over off the right needle. It seems confusing, but hopefully the pictures will help.

cutting.jpgYou continue with this process until you’ve gotten to the last stitch. All you need to do is pull the yarn through the stitch for about five inches, get a pair of scissors and cut the yarn. You’re done!

done1.jpgBut you’ve got two loose strings at each end. What do you do? You weave them in. That’s what the tapestry needle is for. You thread your yarn through the needle and you are going to weave tapestry.jpgthe ends in so there’s a seamless end to the project. When you knit, there are little weave1.jpgbumps on the back side. The best thing to do is just weave your yarn in and out of those bumps and you never see the yarn! Do the same with the other end. Once you’ve woven it in, take some scissors and cut the end. It’s done!!

finished.jpgI hope you’ve enjoyed making your little creation. This is a perfect scrubber for your face, it’s great for little babies or for washing the dishes. Like I’ve mentioned, you can add more stitches to make it wider or add more rows to make it longer. It’s up to you!

I’ll be back tomorrow with Day Five to recap everything we’ve done. Don’t be afraid, go ahead, make another one of these! Post your pictures on your website or blog or Flickr page and leave me a comment! Thanks!
