A day off

Good day! Sorry for the delay in posting today. A friend and I had to make palm trees for Vacation Bible School and that took all day! Another craft I could definitely teach you. Of course, once in my life, I forgot to take pictures, so I guess I’ll have to repeat the process another time! So I didn’t have a chance to get a pattern written up so here’s something about what we’ll be doing this week. On to crocheting!

I said that this week we’ll use the three basic crochet stitches to create granny squares. Granny squares are crocheted squares that you make then join together to make an afghan. Here’s a photo of an afghan I made for my husband out of twelve inch squares. It’s a close up so you can hopefully see the squares. I crocheted almost thirty squares and then joined them with a red border. He wanted it to look like a chess board and he picked out the pattern. This one took me forever just because it was the same pattern over and over again and just in two colors. Plus, it’s the size of our king size bed so that’s a lot of squares! You can see how big it is.

The good thing about making an afghan out of granny squares is it’s a small enough project where you can take it with you anywhere. Throw your yarn, hook, directions and project in a bag and take it to the beach, the lake, while you’re driving on vacation, the ball game, where ever you go. That’s what I did when making this one. I even took all my finished squares to my friend’s house in Pennsylvania and while vacationing there, I did the border around the squares. It can be done anywhere!

Tomorrow I’ll have the first pattern to show you. It’s a basic granny square pattern that you can do anywhere.  You’ll need a skein of acrylic yarn and your “H” hook. If you want, have several skeins of yarn handy to make these in different colors for variety. That’s what makes some afghans loads of fun! Plus they are unique! TTFN!
